Contact your assemblyman, state senator and Gov. McGreevey (, DISTRICT– MUNICIPALITIES INDEX) and let them know that you adamantly oppose all of the bills created to deny Mr. Baraka the right to be our Poet Laureate and/or to abolish the position altogether! Here’s a list of the bills.

Main Bill Information

2002-2003 Legislative Session A2857 Changes appointment and removal process for the State Poet Laureate.

Identical Bill Number: S21 A2859 Allows Governor to remove Poet Laureate from position.

A2864 Eliminates honorarium paid to State Poet Laureate.

A2877 Allows Governor to appoint Poet Laureate who will serve at pleasure of Governor.

A2907 Provides procedure for removal of State Poet Laureate under certain circumstances;ends term of current Poet Laureate.

S21 Changes appointment and removal process for the State Poet Laureate.

Identical Bill Number: A2857 S1981 Allows State Poet Laureate to be removed from position; changes manner of designation of Poet Laureate.

SCR76 Expresses vote of no confidence in Amiri Baraka as State Poet Laureate.

SR104 Calls for the resignation of Amiri Baraka, Poet Laureate of the State of New Jersey, forpropagating anti-Semitic hatred.

Currently, the poet laureate is appointed by a panel of five members. Four of these members are appointed by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities in consultation with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and the fifth member is the previous poet laureate. This bill changes the process for appointing a poet laureate, so that the poet laureate is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Governor. The bill applies to the poet laureate currently holding the designation, and all poet laureates to be designated thereafter. (Statement from bill A2877)
