To control the revolution, they armed the opposition. They scrambled a coalition to dislodge
Gadhafi. They brought out the dossier of dirt they had on him all along, thereby creating
a narrative that demonized Gadhafi so much so as to bag him a hanging in the courts
of public opinion. But this guy has been their partner in crime all these years.
Libya and the Brutality of Nations
By Emmanuel Franklyne Ogbunwezeh
The Choir Sings Again!
The choir of imperialism sings currently in Libya. The overtures in Iraq and Afghanistan are not ended, yet the choir must sing because that is its raison d etre! The Libyans, like their North African neighbors, wanted to stage their own opera to the deities of self-determination. This was after decades under the fossilized jackboots of a political dinosaur. They were midway in the very first sonatas to freedom, when a foreign orchestra of aristocratic greed hijacked the arena; and has continued to conduct the performance ever since. Here the voice is definitely Jacobs but the hand is clearly Esaus. Gadhafi is certainly defeated. But Libya is lost. The orchestra of foreign vultures, hungry for Libyan oil is about to complete its oratorios of destruction, sung to send off Gadhafi. But this story is set to have a second part. The symphonies written in Libyan blood has entered its crescendo. Aristocracies of capital have once again dusted off their dogmas of profit. The ideologies of greed have raised their banners again. Imperial greed is about to dragoon another hapless country into its orbit of exploitation.
The plunder is about to begin! Libya is on the chopping block.
With the Conference of Istanbul and Paris in full swing; Libyan oil is being scrambled out, and apportioned to the war profiteers. The Libyan puppets are being selected and screened. The real occupation has begun. Gadhafi is to be decapitated. He has fallen. He did not leave quietly. His neck has definitely booked an appointment with the hangmans noose, just like Sadaam Hussein before him. That is how empire does business. If you are in its good graces, you can rape your own people all you want. You can fart on their heads all you want. You can steal them blind all you want, and no evil shall befall you. Go ask Mobutu Sesse Seko. But once you fall out of favor with empire, the guillotine awaits your neck. Gadhafi should go write his own obituary! His ass is history. He is simply toast. Empire is merciless. Like a mafia enterprise, it decapitates its opponents and sends its enemies to swim with the fishes.
Currently, this choir sings alongside a murderous orchestra of Arab racism against Black Africans. It is genocide in plain sight. It is ethnic cleansing at the least excuse. Blacks are once more been targeted by angry Libyans, who have seen an outlet to cast them in the mold of scapegoats. Those who preferred Libyan oil more than their human rights slogans are simply watching in unconcern and political correctness. The Libyan opposition is now committing more crimes against their Black compatriots, and other foreigners with Black skin, who are resident in Libya, than Gadhafi ever did at this time in his own revolution. In spite of the pretenses to democratic aspirations, piggybacked on NATO weapons, and Americas tacit approval, the Libyan opposition is massacring its black population to extinction. The world watches in inaction. Puerile declarations are heard over the staccatoral inelegance of bombs and bullets. It is really a dangerous time to be a black man in Libya!
All in all, the choir is still singing. We are a long way from hearing the last song. Whenever the choir takes on this last song, it is never going to be a dirge to avarice. The present congress of strange bedfellows hovering over Libya, have made that option a guaranteed impossibility.
It is a theatre of Avarice!
The theatre of global geopolitics has forever been an amoral jungle. It is an horrendous one. This is the arena, where men empowered by the force of their arms and the privileges of their station, take leave of their humanity in deference to their greedy ambitions. This theatre has forever underwritten and scaffolded the brutal imperialism of economics over ethics. In this raw theatre redolent of Hobbes state of nature; there subsists an obscene triumphalism of raw power over the rights of man. Thomas Paine should be weeping in his grave. He should weep because the glory of humanity is slain upon these high places, and Machiavelli rejoices! This triumphalism underwrites a belligerent sense of privilege for the rich few, who since the dawns of feudalism, must lord it over the swath mass of humanity, emasculated by their fears, armored ignorance, civic apathy, and socio-pathological timidities. Since the days of buccaneering pirates, sailing for God and plundering for country; this arena has licensed the princes of the earth in their perverted deployment of power in service to obscene ends. This citadel of oppression, to achieve its ends of erecting oppressive structures with little resistance to its intention from the people, it unfurls and consistently peddles a social narrative, which reinforces the farce that might is always right. This is the narrative, which not only provides the amoral detergents for power to launder its iniquities; but helps her to hoist and canonize what we have come to identify as the brutality of nations.
In this international arena; individual micro-universes of parochial interests jostle for supremacy. These interests are the primeval kinds. This explains why in these amphitheaters, whatever the powerful consider as their national interests, or the interests of the aristocratic and elitist cabal dictating its national direction is king. These interests trump the nobility of their ethics and supersede the sanctity of their philosophies. It towers above the dogmas of their religions and the doctrines of their ideologies. Here, every noble philosophy of politics is divested of meaning and impregnated with slogans of deceit. In fact with the right arrangements, this jungle hosts, has hosted, and will continue to host the essential arena, where even the most avowed of ideological enemies could meet to define and fine-tune the strategies for gobbling up anyone who stands in the way of their self-interests. History saw Communist Russia joining Nazi Germany to crucify and apportion Poland to their avaricious estates when it suited their fancies. The same Russia later joined the Western Allies to kick the shit out of Hitler, when their interests so dictated. History also chronicled the same perfidious congress of vultures in Biafra. The same Soviet Russia joined Britain who was their ideological enemy, to support Nigerias genocidal aggression against Biafra, when their oil interests swung in that direction; trumping their ideological parallelism with capitalist England.
Some may contend that that was yesterday, when the Cold War held some very dark sway over much of global alliances and realignments. But the end of the Cold War never nullified the fact that whenever imperial feudalism is on steroids, it convokes a congress of vultures. Feudalism did not die with the storming of the Bastille. Neither did imperialism expire with the nominal independence of many erstwhile colonial possessions. They simply shook off their ancient garbs and reappeared in modern robes dyed with the tinctures of legal respectability and social acceptance. But they never lost their fangs or oppressive edges. They refined them. Citadels of oppression and establishments of obscene privilege are very sly and treacherous. They die hard. They are very smart parasites; lecherously sucking the lifeblood of a society, until the people wake up to want to end that relationship. They shuffle off their discredited shells and jump onto the next host, and keep on doing what they know how to do best; namely oppressing the masses to fund their obscene privileges.
In these Olympian hills of interests, Profit is the most powerful god worshipped by all participants. To that end, every other god or goddess of every political or philosophical realm is compelled to abjure himself or herself, and genuflect in timorous subservience to Profit Almighty. This explains why the corridors of all micro-epicenters of modern power are stalked and overpopulated by lobbyists trading influences and peddling leverages to proselytize and exact worship and patronage for the Mammon of their atavistic interests. This also explains why the United Nations, in spite of the hallowed nobility of its declarations, has become an impotent puppet, used by powerful nations to rubber-stamp and justify their aggressive covetousness of other peoples resource.
That the United Nations could degenerate into a rubber stamp of rich, powerful and erstwhile imperialistic Metropoles is really a testament to the futility of our pretenses. The UN was brow-beaten by the rogue American government under George Walker Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumseld; to sanction the invasion of Iraq for no just cause. It sanctioned the decapitation of Sadaam Hussein at Americas orders. That such an August body could allow itself to be deployed as an instrument of vengeance, by an aggrieved superpower, which manufactured fictions to justify its aggressions against a less powerful nation that harbors a resource the superpower deemed its strategic national interest, is really the nadir of the ridiculous. That it could also justify the invasion of Libya by NATO over an anticipated crime that Gaddafi was billed to commit in future is now the last straw that has converted this body from a credible one to a simple theatre of infamy, where power establishments of transnational and supranational avarice go to get legitimacy for their crimes.
The brutality of nations is when a congress of international vultures constitutes itself into the murderers of peoples and undertakers of nations in order to usurp the resources of those nations for its own profit. Vultures are scavengers; the undertakers of nature. They are uninvited guests to every meal convoked by death in the wild. Any animal that is unfortunate to cause its own expiration becomes food for vultures within microseconds of that transition. Sometimes, vultures are known to sense when an animal is on its way to death. Some scavengers are known to hasten this process. Some others wait for the animal to take a bow. Although the death and decadence of any society attracts the undertakers of nature; any well-endowed or resource-rich society that trades in retrogression is on its way to expiration. To that end, it sends malodorous, olfactory invitations to the imperial scavengers to come knocking on the door. The stench of a well-endowed and resource-rich society on its way to corruption, and decay convokes the beasts of every land and clime to come dine off its carrion.
Libya is today the feast as well as the venue, where every beast of many lands and climes have been ushered in to apportion the land to their avaricious estates. Libya became a venue because the Libyans for long through their inaction, allowed Gadhafi, a megalomanic dictator to sit atop their sources of national and social legitimacy for a long time. The integrity of the State under the dictator decayed and paved way for his madness to plunge the nation into anarchy, when the people demanded that he return the sovereignty back to them. Had the Libyans opposed him sometime after his revolution, they would have taken back their land then, and forestalled the invasion of their land by the vultures that are now pretending to love democracy while they have only an eye for Libyan oil.
Not our Own Motherfucker!
Gadhafi has not earned our sympathy. He was no Hannibal! With so many years as the absolute ruler of Libya, he naturally degenerated into a political dinosaur, and anachronistic relic of an expired era. He was an evolutionary hangover of Africas political missteps. He fell into the illusions of omnipotence. He accelerated his steps into the trashcans of historical irrelevance, which is the destiny of every tyrant. He deluded himself with his presumptions. His eccentricities blinded him to the expiration of his time. He overstayed his welcome, and was abandoned by the gods of reason.
He was no Hannibal!
Hannibal remains one of the most brilliant military strategists of all time. This guy struck fear into the hearts of Rome. His name was dread to Roman ears. He was a thorn in the ass of an empire, which overreached itself in stealing and pillaging other peoples lands. Hannibal fought to free his people from the clutches of empire. But Gadhafi grew to become the centre of the problem he came to solve.
He was no Hannibal!
But be that as it may, history will forever attest to the bad-will, sepulchral hypocrisy, and shameless opportunism that marked NATOs involvement in Libya.
NATO, in spite of its narrative that sounded more caritative than political, never intervened to prevent Gaddafi from slaughtering his own people. If it were so, where was NATO, when the Hutus were slaughtering their Tutsi neighbors in Rwanda? Where NATO as Khartoum under Bashir was slaughtering the Darfuris for good measure? Where is NATO as Assad slaughters Syrian protesters on the streets of Damascus? NATOs military intervention on behalf of the opposition was a ruthless, calculated, and coldly executed imperial maneuver targeted at Libyas resources. It was not a charity mission aimed at freeing the Libyans from Gadhafis clutches. It was empire on a mission.
The empires of today, like the imperiums of history, have risen to become debauched, diabolical ogres that ran on the softwares of exploitation. Empires do not only steal OPL-Other Peoples Lands, they steal whatever they can and desire. They confiscate other peoples symbols of power and units of value. That explains why the empire of corporate aristocracy, armed with a belligerent sense of privilege is raping societies across the world today, in the name of globalisation. It also explains why many billionaires, are so very evasive of paying taxes; but have the fluid effrontery to stake claims to the goodies of the State. It seems that what being a celebrity buys you today is that you get almost everything for free, and believe that you have a right to it.
That is what the Libyans should always keep in mind. They may be exchanging Gaddafis yoke for a foreign one. All in all, the yoke remains. It may be a simple change of guards. The Libyans if they are not careful may be exchanging Gaddafis raw enslavement for the polite slaveries of an imperial power.
Gaddafis problem was not that he was not a motherfucker. Everyone knows that. He was like every other political motherfucker that Western interests support and undergird. His major problem was that he was his own motherfucker. He was not a bitch to be bent over by any of the interests greedily horny for Libyan resources. If Gaddafi had been the Wests motherfucker, NATO would have armed him to slaughter his own people. But he was a motherfucker with his own will. By that, he violated the principal rule in being an asshole. The rule states that to be an asshole in charge of a resource rich country, you must be an asshole of some powerful country, or you must be powerful enough to let any junkyard dog know that to approach you is to be eaten by the tiger. He neither had the Euro-American alliance on his side, nor does he have the Chinese on his side. He dismantled his nuclear program, which could have deterred his detractors. He was his own motherfucker, but lacked the power or the back-up to take on the armada of international patrons, who decides which motherfucker would keep on raping his own people, and which one should be decapitated.
If he had the Chinese on his side, like Bashir does in Sudan, he would have gotten away with murder. If he had the Chinese and the Russians on his side, like Mugabe does in Zimbabwe, he could have kept on raping his people till now, without consequence to his throne. But he was his own motherfucker; the worst thing a motherfucker could ever be.
And he will pay for it with his head! To be a tyrant and a motherfucker are mutually exclusive. Both of them will earn you an accelerated visit to the hangmans noose fashioned by rogue empires. Sadaam saw it first-hand. Gadhafi is next in line.
The Euro-American foreign policy, as well as that of every other empire, has always been to search out, and install their own motherfuckers as puppets across many resource-rich nations on earth. Once you resist that, kegs of gunpowder, rain of bombs, or armadas of deadly firepower would remind you who the boss is. In the world of polite wars of today, the CIA and the MI5 together with the French, German, and Belgian intelligence would be given the mission of either engineering your assassination, or sabotaging your government. That explains why Presidents of resource rich countries like Nigeria, must hurry to the White House or No.10 Downing Street to have their job details read out to them immediately after their (s) election. So much for the sovereignty of such countries! If you show some personal initiative that is not cleared with Whitehall or Washington, then heaven or hell would be invited to receive a visitor. Ask Patrice Lumumba or Thomas Sankara. And if you dare go rogue sometime after becoming their motherfucker, a hangmans noose would teach you a lesson you would never live to forget, or a bullet will drill the lesson into your skull to remind you to behave in your next incarnation. Ask Sadaam Hussein and Osama bin Laden, and they will tell you.
Empire has always incubated the motherfuckers that obey its dictates. It kills those ones that develop a mind of their own, or who go rogue. This explains why innocent bad guys that run afoul of imperial dictatorial expectations are hanged, while the guilty bad guys that are in league with the powers that be, are called good friends and strategic partners. Why kick Sadaam Husseins or Gaddafis ass, and leave that of the Saudi royal family that have been funding terrorists that attack the interests of major NATO countries? Why kick Gaddafis ass and leave that of Nguema Teodoro Obiang in Equatorial Guinea, who is not only stealing his people blind but slaughtering opposition into submission? Why Gaddafi and not Assad? Why Gaddafi and not the beleaguered idiots raping Nigeria and rendering the Niger Delta a superlative ecological wasteland? Empire does not kill to do anyone a favour but itself. That is the only reason for NATOs involvement in Libya. Every other thing is a manufactured narrative of hypocritical provenance.
La Isla de la Tortura and the Dangers of Neo-Imperial Hypocrisy
Those arming the Libyan opposition in their justifiable dissidence, postures themselves as impresarios of freedom. Some of them claim to be descendants of, and creators of a noble heritage; an empire of freedom, which began at the European renaissance, and spans most of Europe and America. But the fact remains that an empire of freedom is an oxymoron. It is like materialism constructing metaphysics. They are mutually exclusive terms and facts. Empires are absolute control freaks. It is a tyranny of restraints. Freedom on the other hand, is the dictatorship of liberty. To that end, when a wolf is about to gobble a lamb for dinner before the comity of nations, it manufactures narratives to suit his designs and justify his aggression.
For donkey years, Gadhafi was an asshole of international proportions even to his own people. But the West that guzzled, and was drunk on Libyan oil, was too drunk to see that. They sold him the weapons to oppress his own people and keep them from asking questions about what transpired with the billions that Libya made off her oil resources. The West was having a time of their lives. Libyan oil came cheap to finance their indiscretions. This bought their consciences and blinded them to the plight of the Libyan people. Now that Gadhafi fell out of favor based on the vociferations of his oppressed subjects, baying to throw off their yoke, the Western Imperiums; versed in the ancient art of dissimulation, knew that the best option is that if you cannot beat the wind of revolutionary changes, blowing across the Arab world at the moment, you must hijack and control it. If you cannot beat them, just arm them and lead them from behind.
To control the revolution, they armed the opposition. They scrambled a coalition to dislodge Gadhafi. They brought out the dossier of dirt they had on him all along, thereby creating a narrative that demonized Gadhafi so much so as to bag him a hanging in the courts of public opinion. But this guy has been their partner in crime all these years. Who talks about honor among thieves?
To that end, these narratives and postures, which are meant to deceive the unwary, are all parts of the deceptive tools in the arsenals of empire. In fact, it is the systemic default of empire. It must necessarily manufacture consents, and meanings to sell its iniquitous ontology. It must necessarily pretend to values it never possesses, due to the demands of its nature. It pretends to be a defender, and promoter of freedom, while to be an empire is to be a structural antithesis of liberty.
In Libya, strange bedfellows came together again. Just like it did in Afghanistan, when the CIA was arming Osama bin Laden to fight the Russians. In Libya, guys like Tripoli’s new rebel military commander, Abdel-Hakim Belhaj, who was designated a terrorist by the CIA, targeted for rendition, tortured, and handed over to Gadhafis goons, is now a commander of the opposition army, armed with NATO arms, European, Qatari, and Turkish, money to fight Gadhafi. Abdel-Hakim Belhaj was arrested in Thailand, tortured by the CIA, and handed over to Libya, where he was tortured and sentenced to death. But the revolution came. And the CIA and MI6 changed sides. The guy that was a part of the oranges squeezed out, and the juice sent to the CIA and MI6 is now in a position of power in the New Libya. I wonder what that holds in store for US and British interests. This may be the genesis of another Osama bin Laden in the most proximate potency! Time will tell.
One can see here, that like in every other historical instance, neo-imperial designs remain an enterprise in suffocating hypocrisy. Most of the countries that are now in gangsterist congress to oust Gadhafi were in the same armada of political hypocrisy that was hand in gloves with him. The same guys that wanted him out right now are the very same guys that were doing dirty business with him; shortchanging for donkey years, the same Libyan people they now claim to love so much, as to lend them arms and ammunitions in their push to depose Gadhafi. Gadhafi was their bad guy. Libya was their La Isla de la tortura, and Gadhafi was their torturer-in-chief.
In Ghadafis plight, the bubble of western hypocrisy has been busted. Western democracies in most recent times have distanced themselves from torture in deference to political correctness. They claim that they do not torture. Not in reverence to any lessons of history. Not in respect to any religion or ethics; after all the Christian religion was at the vanguard of the inquisition. Although medieval inquisition was a European invention, one would have thought that the heritage of human knowledge would have recommended the futility of torture in human affairs. That was not to be. The West, instead of torturing her enemies, contracts it out to countries with rogue leaders like Gadhafi. They used him as their proxy torturer in chief. He did their tortures for them. This explains why the US and the UK shipped suspected terrorists to his torture chambers, to be grilled, tortured, and dehumanized in ways that those countries would not want to be identified with. They funded and financed Gadhafis tortures, and are now hounding for his head, since their need of him has expired.
The Brutality of Nations and the Feudalism of Capital
Every people have a right to self-determination. The pretense that democracy is a western invention is simply that; a pretense, with no basis in reality. Self-determination has always been the hunger of the human heart. But whenever an imperial cabal of international buccaneers, rides roughshod upon these legitimate aspirations of a people to deliver its viral loads of tele-guidance mechanisms, aimed at kicking out a native dictator and replacing him with a Sonderkommando of locally-groomed puppets, then that land is lost to its people. That land is forced to host the brutality of nations. You cannot kick out a monkey to replace him with a chimp. They still share the same genetic ancestors.
Imperialism has always canonized shameless opportunism. It seeks, creates, or hijacks primeval fault-lines and fissures of discontent in the body politic of the societies it craves to conquer. It hypes this up; sugarcoating and masquerading its metaphysics of exploitation, under slogans of democracy and freedom. It actively seeks opportunity to deliver its gifts of Trojan horses to these societies under the ruse of helping them resolve internal issues; while the long term goal is the tying of this society onto its apron strings, so that the conquered would yield their labor and resources to finance the extravagancies of empire. Examples of this abound in the contact between empire and the conquered peoples across the globe. In pre-colonial Africa, it exploited tribal tectonic plates in many African nations to organize the slave trade. When these depopulated nations caved in to this demographic plunder of the crème de la crème of its humanity, imperial guns and canons were ushered in to advance and consolidate the imperial hunger for territories and resources.
History is nothing but the chronicle of the brutality of nations!
In the march of civilization, this brutality has always advertised itself before the entire world, against all canons of decency. From the days of ancient Troy, to the thresholds of tomorrow, the brutality and treachery of nations will remain the major furniture of that chronicle of perfidy, which mercenary narratives describe as the march of civilization.
For the powerful, it is the propensity of choice. Whenever the pseudo-aristocratic cabal of elitist interests, ruling many expiring, and ethically bankrupt citadels of power, rise in furtherance or defence of their interests, in areas they consider their spheres of interest; they are ready to consult hypocrisy, convoke infamies, and crucify peoples, and nations in between their avaricious estates. All these are in order to satiate the yawning abyss of their impious ambitions.
The contemporary version of this transnational cabal, which in exuberant days of supremacist eugenics, identified themselves as the masters of the universe, has forever been ruthless in exploiting human beings and resources, and stashing them up for their private use, under the ruse of capitalism. This cabal does not give a hoot if millions of indigenous people inhabiting fragile ecosystems like we see in the South American Amazon forests or the Nigerian Niger Delta are evicted off their lands, to make way for multinational corporations to strip their land of coal, and oil to finance the greed of this cabal. Human lives or the sanctity thereof makes no meaning to greed in the thraldom of impious ambition. Wars are engineered and financed predicated on a shock doctrine, which essays to design a socio-economic or political tabula rasa, upon which rogue interests would write their version of progress and history.
Progress for this cabal means more profit for the powerful interests. The poor majorities across the world are simply means to this end. Where both interests accidentally intersect, it is touted as the beauty of capitalism. Capitalism is beautiful when the CEOs and their camp-followers, which is not up to one tenth of one per cent of the worlds population, own more property and clout than 87% of the world population. Their media mouthpieces run with that in celebratory masturbation. But for billions across the world, it is feudalism dressed in borrowed robes. It is medieval feudalism on modern steroids. It is the feudalism of capital.
That the march of civilization has been a persistent convocation of brutality by the strong against the weak is an understatement. Against all canons of decency that humanity hypocritically adapts sometimes, we have seen evil having a walk-over, above all our sublime declarations. Imperial buccaneers have always consulted extreme violence to conquer or break the revolutionary will of any people or group who wants to shake off the yokes of oppression. The brutality of nation is the impulsive propensity of the rogue micro-empires and aristocratic cabals of privilege, ruling the major global power centres, to consult perfidious narratives and treacherous violence, to secure and advance their neo-colonial interests. Since the dawn of history, the brutality of nations has been manifest.
From Scipio Africanus, who built coalitions of common interests across the aisles of the ancient Roman senate, to bay for the destruction of Carthage; to George W. Bush, who created a laughable coalition of the willing, to sack and plunder Iraq, at the dictates of the Euro-American oil profiteers led by Halliburton; those who hold power have never had qualms of conscience deploying it against those principles they profess, whenever their parochial and insular interests are on the line. Carthage must be destroyed, became the slogan of imperial atrocity upon a people that Rome could neither dominate, nor tolerate. Hannibal lost. Carthage was destroyed. The debauched senators and patricians of Rome then went home to luxuriate in the most unspeakable of debaucheries, underwritten by the wealth stolen off the conquered peoples, and colonies, that were under the yoke of Rome. As Carthage lay in ruins, the unearned privileges ploughed off the backs of the vast peoples and cultures that were conquests of Rome started inducing a socio-cultural decay that led to the decline and eventual fall of Rome.
Africa being parcelled out to competing European interests in 1885 Berlin was fuelled and underwritten by this same conceptual climate of eugenic feudalism, in which these interests view the world and its resources as being created for their game, and convenience. This also explains why Poland was crucified in between two thieves; namely the defunct USSR and Nazism, according to Fulton. J. Sheen; while the whole world watched.1 That equally explains the tragedies of Biafra. It explains the convocation of an international conglomerate of strange bedfellows; whose sworn duty was to starve Biafran women and children to extinction, to achieve their goals of having free access and cheap concessions on the Niger Deltan oil fields. It equally explains why the whole world looked on in conspiratorial silence as Saro Wiwa was arraigned before a Kangaroo judicial inquest, and executed for daring to challenge Shell BPs rapacious plunder of his backyard.2
The Biafran War that started in 1967 nearly ripped Nigeria apart. It also threatened Shell-BP oil operations which had been growing in the region for the past decade. Political, ethnic and economic factors all played a part in the build-up to the war, but at its heart the conflict was about oil. It was not so much a war to maintain the unity and integrity of the country, . . . as a desperate gambit by the Federal government to win back the oil fields of the Niger Delta from Biafra.3
Our authors intending to clear all doubts as to who was driving the war cited the Prime Ministers Personal Minutes to the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary of 29th July, 1969, FCO 67/212 in their submission of the following analysis:
An indication of how concerned the British were about the war is given in a document sent from Harold Wilson, the then Prime Minister, to the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary. Dated some three weeks into the war, it states: It is of national importance that Shell BP investment in Nigeria, which is a major British interest of crucial importance for our balance of payments positions and for our economic recovery, should be protected, I therefore wish that everything should be done, as a matter of the greatest possible urgency, but for the present within the context of our existing policy on Nigeria, to help Shell BP and the Federal Nigerian authorities to establish effective protection of our oil investments.4
They further revealed conscious complicity of the British government in the atrocities perpetrated on the innocent women and children of Biafra, thus:
Although the British government saw Shell BPs oil as our oil, they had a problem: they could not be seen to become directly involved in the war. The Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart replied to the Minister that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) were in continuous touch with Shell and David Barran over what to do.5
The British underwrote genocide in Biafra pursuant to their greed for Oil. Anglo-American micro-empires of the 18th to the 21st century have been underwriting the hijack and overthrow of foreign governments to satiate their greed for resources and influence. Dick Cheneys and the American Enterprise Institutes hijack, and redirection of the terror narrative to sack Sadaam Hussein in Iraq, and gain access to Iraqi oil is equally an offshoot of this feudal conceptual scheme. The same is NATOs tongue-in-cheek reasons, for bombing Gaddafi to smithereens, to secure Libya for puppets amenable to imperial dictation.
The micro-empires of today are those groups of powerful men and corporations, who view the globe as the playground of their greed and inordinate ambitions. This supranational league of elites and aristocracies are possessed of this belligerent sense of privilege, which makes the annihilation of peoples, cultures and heritages possible, whenever it stands on the way of their profit. These micro-empires are actual enfleshments of the principalities, powers, and wicked force of darkness envisaged in the Pauline epistles. This is borne out by their unhinged readiness to advertise brutal ethical bankruptcy in their dealings with anyone who stands against their global dominance. This explains why Libya is today the playground for the advertisement of this brutality of nations.
To that end, anyone who is deceived by the sugar-coated narratives oozing out of the Western media and their satellites to the actual intentions of the patrons of that revolution need to wake up and smell the coffee. Libya is lost unless the Libyan people wake up to the danger of surrendering their sovereignty to the puppets that are presently being appointed by the imperial Metropoles to manage Libyan affairs post Gadhafi. The Libyan people must rise up now and reclaim their revolution from the outside interests that are now massed on the borders, waiting to install their lackeys on the tribunes of Libyan power.

Thomas C. Mountain 2 September 2011After some 8,000 bombing raids, with estimates of 4 bombs used per attack NATO has already dropped over 30,000 bombs on Libya. Thats almost 200 bombs per day for 6 months, some tens of thousands of tons of high explosives. With an estimated 2 Libyans killed per bomb and without a single NATO casualty the Western regimes have massacred over 60,000 Libyans in the past half year with the rebels themselves having said there have been 50,000 Libyan deaths. One hell of a humanitarian intervention isnt it? . . . A major problem for NATO and its Libyan Quisling League a.k.a the National Transitional Council (NTC) is that most of rebel military is now under the leadership the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a self described affiliate of Al Queda in the Maghreb (North Africa). The general in command of the mainly ethnic Berber rebel fighters that have captured the Libyan capital, known as the Tripoli Military Council, is the head of the LIFG. One of his top commanders is head of the Benghazi based rebel army.
With the recent murder of General Younnis, former head of the Libyan secret police and once considered the most feared man in the country, the LIFG has now taken over leadership of almost all of the most effective fighting forces of the Libyan rebellion. . . . South African President Jacob Zuma has condemned the NTC leaders as embezzlers and demanded they return the tens of millions of dollars the NTC top leaderships is charged with stealing during their days in office in the Libyan governmentCounterpunch

Launching the Pedagogical History of Africa Project in Harare yesterday [5 September 2011] , President Mugabe said . . . “The history that must be written by our African scholars and academics here is the history that focuses on African people in struggle as creators of their own destiny rather than mere consumers of stories written about them by passive on-lookers who oftentimes happen to be non-African outsiders . . . . Real history belongs to a people in struggle and not to the interpreters of history. The people themselves are the makers of history and therefore the real historians. The interpreters are mere raconteurs of history and not the actual history-makers as is often wrongly implied . . . Only this way can we avoid history written by colonialists as ‘winners’. Our real winners are the people, whose real history or struggle the so-called winners would like to distort and suppress . . . You cannot be a historian of African people if you do not share their cry or their laughter. No. The African sensibility, reflected in African culture and worldview, is the only accurate compass to guide a historian who is genuine about writing African history. . . . Slavery and colonisation do not themselves constitute African history. They disrupt and falsify the trajectory of African history. They dehumanise Africans to fit into the scheme of European capital. The ideology of racism is created as a parallel process to rationalise the oppression of Africans. . . . I need not stress that it is imperative to edify educational systems, which embody the African and universal values so as to ensure the rooting of youth in African culture in the context of a sustainable and participatory development. This way we continue to foster the spirit of unity in Africa as embodied in the African Unity CharterAllAfrica

By Andrew Rowell and James Marriott
On November 10, 1995 the Nigerian government executed activist and author Ken Saro-Wiwa along with eight other Ogoni activists. Their deaths brought the plight of their people and the role of British oil companies in Nigeria to the attention of the world. Ten years on, Nigeria and the other oil-producing countries of West Africa have only grown in strategic and economic importance to both Europe and the United States. The recent coup in Sao Tome and the botched attempt in Equatorial Guinea both indicate that the West is taking a much closer interest in the region. Recent history suggests that the people of West Africa will receive little benefit from the revenues from oil and gas, and that they will suffer instead from the dire environmental effects of pollution.
Andrew Rowell and James Marriott here explain how western companies cooperate with local elites in West Africa to maintain control and they trace a long and ongoing history of colonial and neo-colonial exploitation. They explore Washington and London’s new interest in the region and they report on the efforts of local people to ensure that the benefits of development are shared more equally.

In a segregated society in which minority writers and artists could find few ways to reach an audience, journalism gave them access to diverse U.S. communities. The original essays in this volume show how marginalized voices attempted to be heard in their day. The Black Press progresses chronologically from abolitionist newspapers to today’s Internet and reveals how the black press’s content and its very form changed with evolving historical conditions in America. The essays address the production, distribution, regulation, and reception of black journalism, illustrating a more textured public discourse, one that exchanges ideas not just within the black community, but also within the nation at large. The contributors demonstrate that African American journalists redefined class, restaged race and nationhood, and reset the terms of public conversation, providing a fuller understanding of the varied cultural battles fought throughout our country’s history. By Henry Lewis Suggs
P.B. Young, the son of a former slave, published the Norfolk Journal and Guide , a black weekly, for more than 50 years, until his death in 1962. From a circulation of a few hundred in 1909 to a circulation of 75,000 during the 1950s, the Guide became the largest press in the South. This book explores P.B. Young’s personal history and charts his positions on a variety of social issues.
Historians have largely neglected the Guide and its editor. Henry Lewis Suggs, mainly using Young’s personal papers (heretofore closed to scholars) and the files of the Guide, fills that historiographical void . . .The book will almost certainly remain the definitive study of P.B. Young.David B. Parker,
Another neglected figure in black history has been rescued from obscurity in this biography of Plummer Bernard Young . . .Suggs has thoroughly researched his subject.Theodore Kornweibel, Jr.

While Wright’s book, which examines the multifaceted “counter-jihad”the phenomenon of moderate Muslims confronting violent and authoritarian interpretations of Islamis consistently engaging, it too often feels more like advocacy than analysis, and tends to be overly coloured by optimism. Wright’s Rock the Casbahtaken from the title of the famous Middle East-themed song by The Clashpicks up where her earlier Dreams and Shadows: The Future of the Middle East left off. And that’s the problem. Wright finds new reform-minded Muslims to praise, but conceptually, this book is almost identical to her previous one. An award-winning journalist, Wright originally set out to write about the counter-jihad in both the Middle East and the West. (The book’s working subtitlestill found on some websiteswas How Sheikhs, Comedians, Rappers, and Women Are Challenging Osama Bin Laden.) Her overview of this subject proves quite appealing.TheNational
