The book examines the theme of the Intellectual and the drama of social change in Peter Abrahams's A Wreath for Udomo, Achebe's A Man of the People, Richard Wright's The Outsider, and Gustave Flaubert's L'Education Sentimentale. Three aspects of the intellectual's political activism are examined: the correspondence between his ideas and political activism, the nature of his herosim and the author's use of the ironic mode to portray his vision of society. Although the works studied come from different literary tradition which do not share common historical experimences, they reveal the interrelatedness of the components of the world civilization.
